About

Dr Jane Power, PhD

A PhD chemist and former pharmaceutical scientist and team leader, and parent of five, with 10+ years helping A-Level students gain confidence and achieve excellent results.

Dr Jane Power, PhD — A-Level Chemistry tutor

My background

Hello! I'm Jane — a passionate, experienced Chemistry tutor, dedicated to helping students gain confidence, make real progress and achieve excellent exam results. I hold a First-Class degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Manchester.

Alongside tutoring, I spent many years working as a professional scientist and team leader for a leading pharmaceutical company. With 10+ years of tutoring experience, I've helped students of all abilities strengthen their understanding, build confidence and achieve their full potential in Chemistry.

As a parent of five, I understand that every student is different. I believe in creating a calm, supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their understanding at their own pace. It's genuinely rewarding to see students grow in confidence, overcome difficult topics and achieve results they can be proud of.

Chemistry Tuition

A-Level Chemistry tuition, tailored to you.

Private, one-to-one lessons that cover the whole specification — and go deep on the topics you find hardest.

Areas of expertise

The whole course, taught by a specialist.

Physical chemistry

Energetics, kinetics, equilibria, rates, Born–Haber, electrochemistry — my PhD specialism and many students' biggest hurdle.

Organic chemistry

Mechanisms, functional groups, synthesis routes and the curly-arrow logic that ties it all together.

Inorganic chemistry

Periodicity, group trends, transition metals and complex ions — made systematic rather than memorised.

Calculations

Moles, concentrations, titrations, yields and atom economy, broken into reliable, repeatable steps.

Spectroscopy & analysis

Mass spectra, infrared and NMR — reading the data and explaining it like an examiner wants.

Practical skills

Required practicals, techniques and the practical-based questions that catch students out in written papers.

Exam-ready, not just taught

Together, we'll practise the way you're tested.

Understanding chemistry and scoring marks are two different skills. Every lesson develops both.

  • Specification-by-specification coverage
  • Turning chemistry knowledge into exam success
  • Mock-exam preparation and feedback
  • Targeted revision of weak topics
  • Active recall and spaced repetition built in

Teaching Approach

How I teach — and why it works.

Patient, personalised lessons that build understanding step by step, then turn that understanding into marks.

In the lesson

A calm, interactive online classroom.

One-to-one, always

Just you and me. Lessons move at your pace and bend around your questions — never a fixed script.

Two-screen teaching

One screen for the explanation, one for the worked example or spec — so you can follow the reasoning and the reference at once.

Live whiteboard

Mechanisms, structures and calculations drawn out step by step, in real time, right in front of you — so you see exactly how each answer is built.

Between lessons

Support that doesn't stop at the hour.

Real progress happens in the days between sessions. I make sure you always know what to do next — and have the resources to do it.

  • My own revision notebooks and topic workbooks
  • Exam question packs with mark schemes
  • Confidence-building exercises
  • Targeted past-paper practice
  • Lesson recordings on request
  • Clear next steps after every lesson

See the approach for yourself.

A free consultation and free 30-minute trial lesson are the best way to experience the two-screen, step-by-step style first-hand.

Sample Resources

A taste of the notes you'll get.

I have comprehensive, carefully structured notes for every topic on the specification, developed and refined over years of tutoring.

Separate, complete notes are available for both the AQA and OCR specifications, including worked examples, exam-style questions and examiner tips throughout. Many students mention these resources in their Reviews.

Below are two sample pages from my AQA notes, illustrating the style and level of detail students receive throughout the course.

The A-Level Chemistry Notebook Series

Putting the Power into your Chemistry A-Level

Year 12 · Alcohols
Sample notebook page: dehydration mechanism of alcohols forming isomeric alkenes

Dehydration mechanism, step-by-step, with isomers explained.

Year 13 · Aldehydes & Ketones
Sample notebook page: nucleophilic addition mechanism of KCN to aldehydes and ketones, forming a chiral centre

Nucleophilic addition, building to chirality.

Each topic is supported by its own detailed notebook, typically over 20 pages, together with past-paper question packs and mark schemes. Students receive the full notebook and question pack for each topic as covered. Sample pages are shown here for illustration.

She taught both of my children — one for GCSE, one for A-Level — and made a huge difference to their confidence and understanding. Her explanations were always clear and easy to follow, and both achieved excellent results. My son will continue his A-Level Chemistry with Jane.

Chemistry had started to feel like something I just couldn't do, but her patience and clear explanations genuinely rebuilt my confidence. By the end of our sessions, I wasn't just understanding the subject, I was actually enjoying it, which I wouldn't have believed possible at the start.

Jane is an amazing tutor — she has helped me enjoy Chemistry A-Level throughout all of Year 12, and I'm so thrilled to continue with her next year. She is very interactive in our sessions and always explains things in a way that is so easy to understand.

From her thorough resources to her outstanding patience, she has significantly boosted my confidence in Chemistry… I enjoy her teaching style, which is completely malleable to the student and their needs instead of set portions to cover each lesson. I would definitely recommend Jane to everyone.

Students and parents have also left recommendations on my Facebook page.

I was uncertain of my capability to get an A grade because I had just got a C on my AS level. However working with Jane really increased my knowledge and understanding of the subject as a whole. If I did not understand something she simply explained it in another way until I understood it.

SSafa H.A-Level student

Jane explained everything in simple terms and made difficult concepts easy, she was always able to answer the questions I had. The booklets Jane creates are always really useful as one will have notes and another will have past exam questions.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things students and parents usually want to know before getting started.

I specialise in AQA and OCR A-Level and AS Chemistry. Everything — the teaching, the past-paper practice and the mark-scheme technique — is tailored to your exact specification.
Both. Most students learn online, one-to-one, from anywhere in the UK — I use a two-screen setup with a live whiteboard, so you see the explanation and the worked example or spec at once, drawn out step by step as we go. I also teach in person in South Manchester, near Princess Parkway (just off the M56). Either way, I share my own topic booklets to work from between lessons.
It's a relaxed, no-pressure chat where you tell me your current grade, your target and what you find hard. I explain how I'd help and we see whether we're a good fit. There's no obligation to book anything.
Yes — a free 30-minute trial lesson, so you can experience a real session before committing to a regular slot. It's the best way to know whether my style suits you.
Absolutely — that's a big part of what I do. I'm patient and supportive, I rebuild foundations gently, and I focus on confidence as much as content. No question is ever too small.
Yes. My lessons are dyslexia-friendly by design: clear visuals, manageable chunks, scaffolded steps and no time pressure. The format should never get in the way of the chemistry.
Yes. Many of my students need a high, secure chemistry grade for competitive courses, and that's exactly what I focus on — the deep understanding and exam technique those top grades take.
Yes. I hold an Enhanced DBS check, a First Class BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Manchester, plus 10+ years of tutoring and years as a pharmaceutical scientist and team leader.
Most students have a weekly lesson, and add extra sessions around mocks and in the run-up to exams. In the holidays, some like to double up. We'll find a rhythm that fits your goals and schedule.
Yes. If two or three classmates from the same college are studying the same board and are at the same point in the course, you can learn together and split the cost — it works especially well online. Just ask and I'll help arrange it.
